FAQ

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Is grain-finished beef better for you than grass-finished?

Across the board, beef is filled with essential vitamins and nutrients that are required for optimal health, as well as healthy fat and protein to help you feel your best. While we believe that beef is always a good option, we also believe that buying direct from a producer will get you a more natural, more economical and overall better product. The difference between grass and grain finished is mainly fat and flavor. Grain-finished beef typically contains more fat and is more flavorful, while grass-finished is leaner and usually has a very distinct flavor that some people don't prefer. As a family, we prefer a more conventional, grain-finished flavor profile, which is why we produce beef the way we do!

Is your beef grass fed?

Our beef is grass-fed and grain-finished All of our animals spend their life on pasture while on the ranch and range forage while they summer on our National Forest permit. They spend 2-3 months before harvest on grain based feeds to create a beefy flavor without any of the gaminess that can often be found in grass-fed varieties. When eating beef, fat typically equals flavor, and the grain-finishing process adds depth of flavor and marbling to the meat that you won't find in solely grass-fed beef.

Does your beef contain any additives?

Our beef is always 100% beef, nothing added... Store bought beef will often contain additives to protect flavor and color, but in our experience, that changes the meat considerably! We eat our own beef because we can recognize the difference between a truly natural product and a product that is tailored to time spent in cold storage and in grocery store coolers.

Do you give your cattle antibiotics?

Yes, we do! When our children are sick, we treat them, so why wouldn't we do the same for our animals? Part of our mission is to steward our ranch and our animals to the glory of God, and caring for them to the best of our ability, so occasionally we do have to give antibiotics. Sometimes we're able to treat animals without the use of antibiotics, but if they are given a dose of medication, we keep track of that. When antibiotics are given, they have a withdrawal period indicated on the label which often stipulates a 28 day waiting period before slaughter to prevent any medication from entering the food supply. We care deeply about our animals and we care deeply about our customers, so we do everything we can to ensure that animals are well taken care of and that there is no chance of antibiotics remaining in our meat.

Are there any growth hormones in your beef?

We do not use any growth hormones in our cattle. There is a lot of conversation surrounding the amount of hormones consumed in meats, but the reality is that one would have to consume a great deal of beef to impact their normal hormone production... Think 95 whole cows PER DAY to match an adult female's daily production of estrogen! We choose not to use growth hormones for the peace of mind it brings to consumers, but we do see the benefit in the beef industry at large.
